On the occasion of Diana Al-Hadid: Archive of Longings, the Henry presents a series of writing workshops with three Pacific Northwest writers who will lead sessions that continue the processes of influence suggested in Al-Hadid’s work, as well as give community participants opportunity to consider "archives" that live close to home and heart. Fed by multiple literary, artistic, and other cultural sources, Diana Al-Hadid’s sculptures meditate on the conflicts and ruptures exposed when these stories are brought together.

The Henry is excited to welcome Catherine Opie as this year’s Monsen Photography Lecture speaker. This annual lecture brings key makers and thinkers in photographic practice to the Henry. Named after Drs. Elaine and Joseph Monsen, the series is designed to further knowledge about and appreciation for the art of photography.

On the occasion of the opening of a picture stuck in the mirror, Bass will usher in the exhibition with a performance in which they embody the work with their own concealed movements and vocalizations. This act of suggestion, miming the mechanics of the sculpture, will be followed by a conversation within the gallery with Shamim M. Momin, Director of Curatorial Affairs.

Join us to celebrate the opening of Packaged Black: Derrick Adams and Barbara Earl Thomas and Diana Al-Hadid: Archive of Longings.

The exhibitions will open to the public on October 2, with a celebration from 1 – 4 PM, to be held in conjunction with the U District Partnership’s festival and the opening of the new light rail station at 44th Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue.

Los Angeles-based artist Math Bass has created a site-specific installation featuring a series of recent oil paintings (a new medium for the artist), a kinetic wall work, sculpture, and large-scale wall applications.

Packaged Black brings together the work of artists Derrick Adams and Barbara Earl Thomas in a collaborative, multi-media installation developed from their shared dialogue about representation, Black identity, and practices of cultural resistance. 

Diana Al-Hadid’s work explores the interplay between the female body and the European art canon; Syrian, Muslim, and immigrant histories and mythologies; and architectural icons and the natural world. 

Artist Naomi Fisher has invited dancer and long-time collaborator Elizabeth Hart to create a choreographed event on the occasion of the exhibition Bodies of Discovery at Occidental Square.
