The Engine Room Residencies: The Black Tones (Performance)

The Henry Art Gallery invites you to an online performance by The Black Tones, the final part of the band’s artist residency held in conjunction with the current exhibition, Gary Simmons: The Engine Room. Over the last month, the Seattle-based rock ‘n’ roll band, founded by twin siblings Eva and Cedric Walker, has spent time in the gallery rehearsing, writing, and experimenting in the space. Join us on YouTube for the culminating performance which will be broadcast on May 29 at 6 PM PDT. No ticket reservation required.

Re/frame: Pop Up Edition

This month the Henry Art Gallery is partnering with the Goethe Institut Pop Up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the highly influential and versatile artist Joseph Beuys (Germany, 1921-1986). Beuys believed strongly that everyone is an artist, and that art has the power to bring about social and political change. Join us as we discuss works in the Henry’s collection by Beuys, as well as a variety of artists who were influenced by him. Re/frame is a recurring program that delves into the Henry's extensive collection, highlighting a different group of objects each month.

FUNHOUSE: The 2021 Henry Gala

The door to art can be anywhere. On April 17, we will raise funds to keep access to Henry programs and exhibitions free—no matter where they take place. Join us for a virtual evening of multimedia "funhouse" experiences featuring Henry artists, a program that highlights our work and what’s to come, music by Calico, and more. Let Tom Douglas take care of dinner, win prizes, and help us open art to everyone. Tickets are free!

Art Reflection and Writing Workshop with Brittney Frantece

What are the many conversations a work of art can incite? What do we experience when we sink into the red hues of Brittney Leeanne Williams’s Our Horizon (2019), and what do we feel when witnessing the regurgitation in Wangechi Mutu’s All the Way Up, All the Way Out (2012)? In this online workshop, we will practice unpacking and articulating our varied experiences as we virtually interact with some of the artworks featured in Plural Possibilities & the Female Body. We will engage in art writing that stages conversations between the artists, the art pieces, the world, and you–the viewers.

Illustrating Injustice: Conversation with Curator Dr. Ann Poulson

Join Associate Curator of Collections Dr. Ann Poulson for an online interactive conversation featuring installation photography and video of Illustrating Injustice: The Power of Print. Highlighting the power of printed material to communicate social and systemic injustices, the exhibition features work by French lithographer Honoré Daumier (1808–1879, Marseille, France) and American photographer Danny Lyon (b. 1942, New York, NY), as well as a selection of late twentieth-century prison newsletters from the Washington Prison History Project archives. We invite you to join Dr.

Re/frame: In reference to…

Most art is not fully original; artists draw inspiration from other art and the world around them. Some artists, however, take it one step further by co-opting imagery intentionally for their own various purposes. Whether it be in reference, irreverence, or an act of reclaiming, these artists have used imagery many of us may recognize to shine a new or different light on their reference (or source?) material. Re/frame is a recurring program that delves into the Henry's extensive collection, highlighting a different group of objects each month.

Re/frame: In the Forecast

Humans have yet to figure out how to control the weather—we just enjoy it or endure it as best we can. A rainstorm might provide a chance to stay inside and read, or go out to splash in puddles. Or, it might cause a major flood that threatens crops, homes, and lives. How we react to and interact with weather tells us a lot about ourselves as individuals and cultures.

Dolphins, ships and other vessels

In this performance reading, artist duo Bambitchell continue their exploration of the legal frameworks that govern non-human animals and objects, moving from the territorial jurisdictions explored in their film Bugs & Beasts Before the Law (2019), to the legal realm of the sea. Dolphins, ships and other vessels is a polyvocal narrative that spans bodies of water.
