Q and A: Unpacking Joël-François Durand's new work Tropes de : Bussy 

<p>A new work by UW Composition professor Joël-François Durand, commissioned by Seattle Symphony and Music director Ludovic Morlot, premieres April 18 and 20 at Benaroya Hall. Retired UW professor Larry Starr delivers pre-concert talks on both evenings. The colleagues met recently at the School of Music for a conversation about the new work and other topics. </p>

The Strad: New String Quartet incorporating brain waves to be premiered by the JACK Quartet

<p>Two special events in Spring Quarter highlight ongoing research by UW composers, research associates, and neuroscientists. On April 19, quadriplegic artists improvise with professional musicians using only their brain waves in a collaboration between DXARTS Art+Brain Lab and Swedish Neuroscience Institute. On May 18, the School of Music and DXARTS present Human Subjects, in which New York chamber group the JACK Quartet performs a new string quartet incorporating brain waves.</p>

A special class section offered this fall at the School of Music is a learning experience for both teacher and students, a convergence of roles for one musician whose life is divided between his life as a performer and life as a teacher.

Meet at Meany Hall Room 268 for weekly rehearsals with the UW’s resident Gospel music expert, Phyllis Byrdwell, a giant of Seattle’s Gospel music community. Byrdwell led the music ministry at Seattle’s Mount Zion Baptist Church for more than 50 years. This class, introducing students to songs and methods of the Gospel tradition, includes a final performance on June 3 at the UW’s Gerlich Theater. No prior experience required.

No prior experience is required to take this class led by Javanese master musician Heri Purwanto, the School of Music’s spring quarter Ethnomusicology Community Artist-in-Residence. Class time in this introduction to the Indonesian music and dance form of Gamelan includes weekly rehearsals on the UW’s extensive set of gamelan instruments, with a culminating performance on June 4 at the UW’s Gelrich Theater.
