<blockquote><span><span>The UW Percussion Ensemble (Bonnie Whiting, director) presents a year-end performance shared with the UW Steel Drum Band (Shannon Dudley, director) and Gamelan Ensemble (Heri Purwanto, director). The Steel Band performs a mix of calypso and salsa classics, as well as an original composition by graduate student Emily Silks.

<p>Chopin’s Nocturnes often belie their title of ‘Night Pieces.’ Each one is a small tone poem with moments of torment and grandeur, as faculty pianist Craig Sheppard demonstrates in his performance of the complete set of Nocturnes. </p>

<p><span>Auditions for the Studio Jazz/Big Band will include performance of a chromatic scale from lowest to highest and back down, an up-to-one-minute excerpt (student choice), transcription, etude, etc., that demonstrates the musician's abilities as a jazz player, sight-reading, and improvisation (optional).

<p>Faculty pianist Cristina Valdés performs music by Henri Dutilleux, Alexander Scriabin, Huck Hodge, Ruth Crawford-Seeger, and Gabriela Ortiz in this program of preludes and etudes. <p>David Alexander Rahbee conducts the University Symphony in a performance of Schubert's “Unfinished” Symphony and music by Italian composer Luigi Dallapicolla. The orchestra is then joined by the Combined UW Choirs to perform Schumann’s <em>Nachtlied,</em> Op. 108 and Ravel’s <em>Daphnis et Chloé:</em> Suite No. 2.</p>
