Studio Jazz (Big Band) Ensemble Auditions, Fall 2023 (Trumpets, Trombones, Saxophones)

<p><span>Auditions for the Studio Jazz/Big Band will include performance of a chromatic scale from lowest to highest and back down, an up-to-one-minute excerpt (student choice), transcription, etude, etc., that demonstrates the musician's abilities as a jazz player, sight-reading, and improvisation (optional).

Faculty Concert: Carrie Shaw with uluuul: More Than Beautiful: Experiments in Vocal Timbre 

<p>Electroacoustic trio<span> </span><em>uluuul</em> (Carrie Shaw, soprano; Mabel Kwan, keyboard; Mauricio Pauly, multi-instrumentalist and electronic music creator) performs music from their latest collaboration, created with support from the UW Royalty Research Fund (RRF). </p>

Frequency: Variations

<p style="font-weight: 400;">Chamber group Frequency—violinists Michael Jinsoo Lim and Jennifer Caine Provine, violist Melia Watras, and cellist Sarah Rommel—performs works by Sergei Prokofiev, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint Georges, Benjamin Britten, Felix Mendelssohn, Kaija Saariaho, and the world premiere of a new work by Melia Watras in this exploration of the musical form of theme and variations.</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">Dynamic duo Cuong Vu and Cristina Valdés straddle the worlds of contemporary classical music and free improvisation, premiering works for trumpet and piano by Oliver Schneller, Wang Lu, and Skúli Sverrisson, and performing music by Huck Hodge and <span>Eva-Maria Houben</span>. </p>
