Modern Music Ensemble  

<p>Cristina Valdés leads the UW Modern Music Ensemble in performances of works from the mid-20th century and beyond. Program includes pieces by Patricia Alessandrini, Kaija Saariaho, Christian Wolff, Huck Hodge, Sarah Hennies, and Huang Ruo. </p>

Studio Jazz Ensemble and Modern Band

<p>The Studio Jazz Ensemble performs music by Mercer Ellington and Bill Holman, as well as other big band arrangements and repertory selections. The Modern Band performs a set of original compositions by band members EJ Brannan, Andrew Friedrich, Beau Wood, Trevor Eulau, and Jacob Linden.</p>

Chamber Singers and University Chorale 

<p>The Chamber Singers (Geoffrey Boers) and University Chorale (Giselle Wyers) present their Winter Quarter concert. The University Chorale presents “Village Bells," a program of works by Ralph Vaughn Williams, Aaron J. Kernis, Veljo Tormis, and others. With special guest narrator Guntis Smidchens, and soloist Sophia Parker. The Chamber Singers presents "Improvisation, Collaboration, Creation," a program of music by Claudio Monteverdi, Jocelyn Hagen/Spearfisher, and young composers from Seattle's Columbia Choirs organization (Katrina Turman, executive director).

Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band

<p>The UW Wind Ensemble (Timothy Salzman, director) performs music by Florent Schmitt and Jennifer Higdon. The Symphonic Band (Shaun Day, director) performs music by Darius Milhaud, Ronald Lo Presti, and Valerie Coleman. With Scott Farkas, percussion soloist on Jennifer Higdon’s Concerto for Solo Percussion and Band. </p>

UW Symphony with John Turman, horn; Sunny Xia, Seattle Symphony

<p>The UW Symphony (David Alexander Rahbee, director) performs music by Sibelius, Glière and Tchaikovsky in this end-of-quarter concert. With faculty artist John Turman, horn soloist on Glière: Horn Concerto, Op. 91 in B flat Major; and Seattle Symphony assistant conductor Sunny Xia, guest conductor for Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Op. 36, in F minor. </p>

UW Steelband

<p>The UW Steelband (Shannon Dudley, director) presents an end-of-quarter concert of <span>Caribbean classics—calypso, soca and son montuno--as well as an original new tune by Emily Silks. </span></p>

Faculty Concert: Melia Watras, viola: NewDub

<p>Violist/Composer Melia Watras presents a celebration of the viola with an evening of world premieres composed by UW faculty, students, and alumni. The program includes UW faculty composer Joël- François Durand’s <em>Geister weider… pour alto solo</em> (written for Watras), a collaborative composition by Watras and her former student Madeline Warner, and four pieces commissioned by Watras especially for this event, by UW students and alums Sandesh Nagaraj, Jonathan Rodriguez, Breana Tavaglione, and Wei Yang.

Faculty Concert: Robin and Rachelle McCabe, piano: Double Play

<p>Pianists Robin and Rachelle McCabe return to the Meany stage to perform Brahms’s magisterial two piano arrangement of his F minor quintet as well as music by Ravel and Prokofiev in this spirited display of sisterly chemistry.</p>
