Humans have yet to figure out how to control the weather—we just enjoy it or endure it as best we can. A rainstorm might provide a chance to stay inside and read, or go out to splash in puddles. Or, it might cause a major flood that threatens crops, homes, and lives. How we react to and interact with weather tells us a lot about ourselves as individuals and cultures.

In this performance reading, artist duo Bambitchell continue their exploration of the legal frameworks that govern non-human animals and objects, moving from the territorial jurisdictions explored in their film Bugs & Beasts Before the Law (2019), to the legal realm of the sea. Dolphins, ships and other vessels is a polyvocal narrative that spans bodies of water.

Performance and the Afterlives of Injustice reveals how the voices and visions of artists in South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo can help us see what otherwise evades perception from the injustices produced by apartheid and colonialism.

Set in Motion is the Henry’s first city-wide public art exhibition, organized by Shamim M. Momin, Director of Curatorial Affairs. This multi-artist project asks what it looks like to mobilize art and encourage community engagement under lockdown and while socially distanced. How do creative communities respond or adapt to shifting or exacerbated spatial and financial constraints? What is the role of public art now? Joined in conversation are four of the ten Set in Motion artists, Marin Burnett, Amir H.

Fermented Face is a workshop that uses facial massage and a guided meditation to ask questions about bodily borders, ideas of porosity and contamination, and the importance of touch in these contemporary times. Participants will be mailed a small vial of artist-made salve with live microorganisms and will massage this into their face or another part of their body according to guided instructions. Disappearance Landscape is a virtual workshop designed and facilitated by artist Maria Gaspar that uses the body to interrogate and intervene in highly contested sites. Using green screen strategies, participants will examine jails, prisons, border walls, conflict zones, and other places of power in order to mediate, flip, dissect, transpose, or dismantle forms of oppression and confinement. The Henry Art Gallery will be mailing free kits to workshop registrants, that include paper and adhesive, to construct a greenscreen background for the participatory workshop.

How do we relate to animals, and how do they relate to us? How do artists interrogate these relationships in their practice, and how has animal imagery been used to explore larger questions?

Join us for a panel discussion with muralist Saiyare Refaei, print-maker Andrea Marcos, and videographer Enrico Abadesco from La Resistencia, a grassroots organization based in Washington State whose #FreeThemAll campaign leverages the power of art and storytelling to end the detention of immigrants and stop deportations.
