In Everlasting Stranger, New York-based choreographer and writer Will Rawls (b. 1978, Boston, MA) activates relationships between language, dance, and image through the fragmentary medium of stop-motion animation. In his installation, time and movement slow as a live, automated camera photographs the frame-by-frame actions of four dancers.

Borders, across the Americas and around the world, have come to represent spaces of violence, captivity, and death. How can artists, academics, and activists generate new stories and representations that allow us to challenge existing border politics and imaginaries? How can art help us actively and reflectively promote life over death, freedom over detention?

This month the Henry Art Gallery is partnering with the Goethe Institut Pop Up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the highly influential and versatile artist Joseph Beuys (Germany, 1921-1986). Beuys believed strongly that everyone is an artist, and that art has the power to bring about social and political change. Join us as we discuss works in the Henry’s collection by Beuys, as well as a variety of artists who were influenced by him. Re/frame is a recurring program that delves into the Henry's extensive collection, highlighting a different group of objects each month.
