<p>The School of Art + Art History + Design is sad to announce the passing of Associate Professor Doug Jeck on February 7, 2022. He died unexpectedly at age 58 from natural causes. Jeck taught at the University of Washington from 1996 to 2022.</p>

Absence and erasure challenge the imagination in </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lauren Williams: Wake Work*,</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> an exhibition created as part of Williams’ 2022 Jacob Lawrence Legacy Residency. </span></p>

<p>Due to the passing of Professor Doug Jeck, 3D4M has decided to cancel the open house. There will still be an opening for the two student exhibitions starting at 6pm.</p>

<h2><strong>Background</strong></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The start of this academic year brought layers of anxious excitement for our new cohort of BA in Art Departmental Honors students. This group of 17 were selected through a competitive admission process during the year prior, and for many of them, this autumn was their first time stepping onto the UW campus, their first quarter in the UW Art Building, and their first time meeting their classmates in real life.</span></p>

<p>The sixth volume of <em>MONDAY</em>, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery’s arts journal, will debut February 3, 2022. Titled “Lux Aeterna,” the new volume extends the themes and inquiries of the gallery’s 2021 <a href="/news/2021/07/15/lux-aeterna">exhibition</a> of the same name, which considered how technological, economic, and cultural forces shape the ways we produce, share, and experience media — and how that media in turn influences our values and aesthetics. </p>

<p><span>The School of Art + Art History + Design is very pleased to announce the hiring of Jennifer Baez and Caitlin Earley for two Latin American art history positions.</span></p>

<h2><span>Background</span></h2>
<p><span>Noah Simblist is associate professor in the Painting + Printmaking department at Virginia Commonwealth University. He also works as a curator, writer, and artist with a focus on art and politics, specifically the ways in which contemporary artists address history. He earned his Ph.D in art history from the University of Texas at Austin (2015), his MFA in painting from the University of Washington (1999), and his BA in visual art from Hampshire College (1996).</span></p>

<p>This quarter's part-time faculty include three in the Division of Art, one in the Division of Art History, and five in the Division of Design. Learn more about them below.
